Congratulations are in order for Rihanna, who is expecting her first child with A$AP Rocky and styling out maternity fashion to mesmerising effect. No over-the-bump jeans for our Rih. Barely anything about her haute streetwear has changed, save for the glorious fact she now leaves her Chanel puffers and Jean Paul Gaultier cardis undone to show her growing belly. Her signature baggy Vetements denim sits a little lower – all the better to show off her Christian Lacroix and Jacquie Aiche body jewellery – but it’s business as usual for fashion’s favourite bad gal, who rolls through life in Balenciaga and Amina Muaddi.

Why should Rihanna swap her The Attico stirrup leggings for stretchy pairs labelled as maternity wear? Making small tweaks to her style, rather than surrendering to a market of comfy, bump-friendly clothes, most likely makes Rihanna feel like herself at a life-changing moment, which is arguably worth all the Prada scarves money can buy.

The Fenty mogul also follows in the footsteps of fellow high-profile stars, such as Jodie Turner-Smith and Emily Ratajkowski, who made pregnancy dressing all about pure glamour, with an emphasis on body confidence and sex appeal. With her wispy babydoll tops framing her belly, Rihanna is the latest example of a woman embracing one of the most joyous times in her life and looking like a total goddess in the process. That radiance, whether she’s lifting up her No Limit football jersey in the bathroom or being photographed by Miles Diggs in a Harlem pregnancy-reveal fashion shoot, of course comes from within.

Having said all that, we’re hungry for more Rihanna maternity looks. We want more Martine Rose track jackets and Saint Laurent miniskirts – that excellent combination of mens- and womenswear she does so well; more Celine cargos, tangerine coats and crystal-embellished Gucci X Balenciaga heels – for the high-low mood she perfected long ago. We’ll even take the Awake trackies, worn with Vans X A$AP Rocky Old Skool sneakers, thank you very much.

It’s exhilarating to watch her do her thing. But it has always been thrilling to watch Rihanna go her own way. She is the influencer’s influencer. If these high-octane pregnancy looks convince one woman that shrouding their bump in diamanté chains is a good idea – or simply that wearing whatever she wants is a good idea – then that’s a powerful fashion message that goes beyond how good Rihanna’s latest vintage haul is. The best part? “I’ll have kids – three or four of ’em,” Rihanna once told British Vogue. This is just the first chapter of Rihanna’s style as a mother.
